How Winners Are Chosen

The Fary Memorial Scholarship Program will select scholarship recipients from applicants nominated by the respective District Committee of: Northern District (Essex County, King George County, Westmoreland County, Lancaster County, Northumberland County and Richmond County), Central District (Caroline County, King and Queen County, Gloucester County, Mathews County and Middlesex County) or Southern District (Charles City County, James City County-Stonehouse Magisterial District only, King William County, New Kent County and York County-Bruton Magisterial District only). Candidates will be evaluated on the following criteria:

1. Academic achievement based on grade point average, SAT or ACT test scores, class rank and academic honors - minimum requirements are a 3.5 cumulative GPA and combined SAT Critical Reading and Math score of 1100 or ACT Composite score of 24;

2. Communication and leadership skills as evidenced in the application, essays and possible interviews with the committees;

3. Participation and leadership in school activities and community/public service based on the applicant’s extracurricular involvement, honors and awards;

4. Three Letters of Recommendation and School Counselor Report, as stated above;

5. Financial need of the applicant's family as reported on application and FAFSA Student Aid Report, and information regarding pending scholarship applications, if any.

The Committee for the District in which an applicant resides will review all qualifying applications and extend to the most qualified applicants invitations to interview at the District level. Personal interviews will be conducted on two levels. If selected to interview, an applicant will be invited to interview with the District Committee. From those interviewed at the District level, as many as three students will be chosen to interview with the Finalist Committee. Applicants should be prepared to discuss their personal goals, academic interests, leadership experiences, financial needs, and other possible scholarship opportunities, if any. All applicants will be expected to be available for interviews with the Fary Memorial Scholarship Committees on the scheduled dates. No individual exceptions will be granted.
